For years people have been using “URL rewriting” on websites to implement “clean URLs“, “pretty URLs“, and even “Well Designed URLs” (the name of this initiative), but all of those terms are colloquial. When those techniques are studied and their rationale analyzed it becomes clear there is more to the concept than just a handful of techniques.
As such I will be advocating that URL Design be elevated to a Discipline. And within that discipline the most important aspect is what I’ll refer to as User-Centered URL Design. This subset is of course the focus on the Well Designed URLs initiative. Part science and part art, I plan to both promote the disciple of URL Design and to advocate that it be studied as part of any curriculum that covers the Tim Berners-Lee‘s recently announced field of Web Science. I also believe it to be a subset of Information Architecture.
